Welcome to your personal results analysis booklet for the 2024 Australia-Wide Novice Pairs.

You will have already received your first booklet on the day of the event – an instructional booklet with advice on how to bid and play the hands. This is your second booklet, looking at the actual results from around Australia.

All of the participating clubs (except for Melton) have submitted their travelling scoreslips, and the event has been scored across the field. With over 600 tables submitted for each board, and nearly 18000 boards played overall, this is your chance to directly compare your results with players from all over the country, board by board.

For each board we have displayed a full national travelling scoreslip, plus a summary of the most common contracts and results, with some additional comments about the final results. The summary also shows your own result, and also the results of one of the top ranked pairs. This way you can see exactly what you needed to do if you wanted to win the event!

This booklet also contains the list of the top 436 pairs in the event, on the last few pages.

Comments:
With the excellent heart suit, quite a few Wests insisted on playing in hearts, and this turned out to be a winning decision. Technically 4 can be beaten on a high diamond lead (on continual diamond leads, West would run out of trumps and go down) but that's very unlikely and most pairs made 4 for a 76% score.
Pairs who made nine tricks in 3NT had to settle for a respectable 59%. These are very generous scores for making a 26-point game; this is because many pairs had a misunderstanding about whether 2 and 2NT were forcing, so they missed game.

Comments:
The most common contract here was 2NT, which is understandable with 24 HCP. It would be nice if you could stop in 1NT (as recommended in the souvenir booklet) but that's a difficult decision to make.
About a third of the 2NT bidders went down, for a 22% score. However, making 1NT would not have been much better; whatever contract you are in, the only way to get a good score is to make eight tricks (for example, finessing the 10 to take AQ, K, AK and three hearts). Setting up spades will also work.
Playing in 2 making nine is the easiest path to a good score (74%).

Comments:
There should not be any pairs in slam here, with just 29 HCP and no good fit, but the 3-3 diamond break does allow you to make 12 tricks. South's 10 is an important card, as that would give you a small extra chance to make slam even if diamonds do not break (when the J drops doubleton). You will score below average if you fail to take your 12 tricks.
The surprising result was the high number of pairs in 3. This might come from auctions like 1-1-2-3, with North not realising that 3 is only invitational, not forcing (see the booklet for notes on forcing alternatives). Having said that, it's not clear why South would fail to accept the invitation.

Comments:
Most pairs managed to reach 4 here, with just a few getting stranded in 3 (either by West making a non-forcing bid, or East passing a forcing bid). A lot of matchpoints swing on whether the defenders can take their three tricks (EW score 43% if they do, 11% if they don't).
On a black-suit lead, declarer will have enough dummy entries to set up the club suit for 11 tricks. A red-suit lead from North will attack dummy's entries to prevent this. The defence still has a chance on a spade lead, as long as South switches to a trump immediately.

Comments:
The most popular result here was 3 making (scoring EW 64%, but deserving more), and 4 one off (scoring EW 32%). However, there were quite a lot of EW pairs who sold out to the NS diamonds, and the best that these pairs could do defending 3 was a pitiful 12% score.
This kind of hand is a problem in a Novice event, because teachers complain when I advise West to overcall with 11 HCP, but it's important to remember that not all 11-counts are the same. When you have a very good five-card suit, you should make a reasonable effort to mention it.
There are plenty of 'rules' about when you should and shouldn't bid, but the most important rule is to trust your instincts, and then learn from the times that your instincts turned out to be wrong.

Comments:
NS have 25 HCP on this deal, but they mostly allowed themselves to be bullied by West's hearts. In the cases where NS did manage to get into the auction, I can understand why they chose to play in diamonds rather than notrumps. South's heart stopper is fragile, so bidding 3NT is a brave action.
Defending 3 (and beating it by one trick) is the most common result, and leads to an average board. Sadly, bidding 4 turns a plus into a minus and a poor result for NS. Bidding 3 fares much better (66%), and bidding 3NT or 4 is a huge success.

Comments:
In the souvenir booklet I said that it would be difficult for EW to reach 2, but it turned out to be just a few tables short of being the most popular contract. A well-earned 60% score, and about half of them managed an overtrick for 70%.
To prevent declarer from making the overtrick, North should lead a top club and continue with three more rounds of the suit, allowing South to ruff the fourth round (overruffing dummy).
The most popular spot was 2, giving the North players an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Bidding a five-card suit twice is rarely a good idea.

As expected, NS controlled the deal at most tables, as EW were not able to find their spade fit. This should have been good news for NS, but many Souths let things get out of control.
With 19 HCP, South is too strong to open 1NT, so the correct opening is 1, planning to jump-rebid 2NT if North responds. However, if North is too weak to respond, South should take that as a warning. If EW enter the auction and give South another chance to bid, South should be cautious – there is no need to do any more than 1NT opposite a passing partner. Most Souths who overbid to 2NT received a below-average score.
If EW manages to play in spades, an 88% score is available.

This was the flattest board of the set so far, with nearly every pair in 4, and the results split evenly between 10 tricks (slightly below average) and 11 tricks (a surprising 81% score).
It's not clear why so many declarers failed to take 11 tricks. You have to lose the ace of trumps, and you might lose the A (if the defenders take it in time). The only other thing to worry about is the K, and that card can be finessed. In fact, with North having opened the bidding, the club finesse is almost certain to win.

With 27 HCP, most pairs reached game, and most of those found the 4-4 spade fit. However, there were a lot of variations in the card play.
4 depends entirely on how many clubs you lose. If you cash the A and play a club to the ten (or queen) you will lose two clubs and go down in 4. Pretty much any other play (such as leading the queen or playing a club to the nine) will make the contract. An excellent choice is to play a club to the ten (losing to the jack) while leaving the ace in dummy. Then you can finesse against the K later. Making 4 is worth 80%.

Like Board 9, nearly all pairs reached the major-suit game, and the result was split evenly between 10 tricks (slightly below average) and 11 tricks (again, 81%). It's quite surprising that these matchpoint scores are the same as Board 9, because that board required nothing more than a finesse, while making 11 here is a lot trickier.
There are actually four possible losers in this contract. The K and A cannot be avoided, but many pairs will also lose to the Q, after taking the diamond finesse. The other possible loser is the Q, if you play the king on the first round of spades.

Comments:
There are 12 tricks available here, but there's no need to bid slam to get a good score. With not many pairs in slam, bidding 3NT and taking all your tricks is worth 73%.
The only trap is to avoid playing in a minor-suit game; this will lose to all the pairs in 3NT, as well as pairs in slam. 5 making six is worth just 32%.
This is a good textbook deal for players wanting to improve their card play. Many pairs in 3NT cashed their 11 top tricks and gave up – still beating the 5 bidders for a 54% score, but you should do better. The key play is to set up a heart trick before giving up your stoppers in the other suits.

Comments:
The 5 bidders slightly outnumber the 4 bidders, which is probably a losing strategy in the long run. Today, the 5 bidders scored 76% for 600, while 4 scored 88% for 620, so not much difference. More importantly, 5 had a higher success rate (4 can be beaten with club ruffs).
Both contracts depend on how many spades you lose, so declarer will need to finesse against the Q at some point, but this will be futile if the defenders have taken the first four tricks (A, club ruff, A, club ruff). The defenders will need at least one club ruff for a decent score.
Declarer will score a bonus on a heart lead, as North's diamond losers will escape on the AK.

Reaching 3 turned out to be less challenging than I thought, as it was the most popular contract. I'm guessing that most of the West players are overcalling 2 – it's a terrible overcall, but being non-vulnerable lets you get away with a lot of undisciplined bids.
Defending 2 left EW with just 30% (eight tricks) or 17% (nine tricks). To earn the 30% score, the defenders need five tricks, and the shortest route to that target is a diamond ruff. Maybe not at trick one, but West should get another chance before the play is over. Declarer can't draw trumps without wasting crucial entries.

The popular contract was 2NT, which could have been reached in two ways:
1) East opened 1, West responded 1, and East rebid 2NT (18-19). With only 5 HCP and no ace or king, West would have done much better to pass 1, which is EW's best spot on this deal.
2) East opened 1, South overcalled 2, and East refused to back down. Defending 2 would have been better (even better than playing 1).
Playing in 2NT led to an incredibly wide range of results, as there are dozens of different ways that the play might go.
1NT was also a common spot, with East opening 1NT. Playing 1NT as 16-18 (instead of 15-17) is quite common in some regional clubs.

As I anticipated in the souvenir booklet, the table auction of 1-1NT was not found at many tables in the Novice Pairs. Presumably East bid 2, West rebid the diamonds, and East felt obliged to show the diamond support.
Getting to the three-level didn't do any harm, as there are ten tricks in 3. Declarer has to lose the A and K, but you can hold heart losers to one by taking the double finesse (running the 10, losing to the K, and then finessing against the Q later). About half of the declarers lost a fourth trick (either failing to take the second heart finesse, or failing to ruff the spade loser) and that turned a 72% score into a 45% score.

The first few bids are straightforward, but a lot of tables got out of control when South bid again over 2. Sometimes 10 HCP is enough to invite game, but this is not one of those occasions. The 4-3-3-3 shape is not helpful, and queens and jacks are overrated (on some hands they are no use at all).
Having reached 4, quite a few declarers managed to make it. After giving up the K, Q and A, it is possible to take one diamond, one diamond ruff, four trumps, three hearts, and the Q. Alternatively, the opponents might lead a club, setting up your 10, in which case you won't need the diamond ruff.

While it's usually better to play in notrumps rather than a minor, on this deal it doesn't make much difference, with both 1NT and 2 scoring +90. The majority chose 2, giving me another chance to remind you that you should not be bidding a suit twice with only five cards (remember all those people who played in the 5-1 fit on Board 7).
Both 1NT and 2 went down as often as they made. One winning line in 1NT (on a heart lead) is to win the A, cash the KJ, and play a spade. South can win the A and cash five more tricks, but you have the rest.
In 2, the key play is to throw a heart on the J before dummy runs out of trumps (taking the A, then two spades, and lastly five diamonds).

In the given auction, West's 3 bid is preemptive, aiming to stop NS from finding a possible minor-suit fit. On the actual deal, NS can make 4, but it's tough for either player to bid it over 3. About 200 pairs managed to play in 2, which means NS were far too timid – letting your opponents play at the two-level in a ten-card fit is a terrible idea. Push them to the three-level and make them work for their plus score.
Many pairs reached 4, which technically is a good spot (with North making 130 in 4). In real life, 4 is a poor spot, because no one is bidding 4, and all the other EW pairs are making 3.

There were more pairs in spades than hearts, and I can understand that. The pairs who did find the heart fit ended up in game, of course, and about half of them made it.
The winning play (in either contract) is to play a spade to the jack, losing to the king. When the Q drops on the next round, the spades are high. This will result in ten tricks (five spades, AK, AK and eventually a heart)
NS had very little control over this result. If spades are trumps, South can save a few matchpoints by getting a heart ruff.

With a balanced 15 HCP opposite a balanced 10 HCP, there should be no doubt about this contract, so if you did not reach 3NT then this is the board your partnership needs to discuss. Of course, 25 HCP does not guarantee that 3NT will make, but in the long run you will lose if you don't bid it.
Making nine tricks is not a problem, with four spades and four clubs on top, and one of the red kings will come good (both aces are onside). The only item of interest is the tenth trick. If West leads a heart (ignoring South's 2 bid) then declarer will have time to get both red kings. On a diamond lead, the defenders will have four tricks before South can get the K.

With only 21 HCP, most pairs played a partscore here. The hands fit very nicely for ten unstoppable tricks: after drawing two rounds of trumps, you can ruff your fourth heart in dummy.
If trumps had not been 2-2, you would have had to rely on diamonds for the tenth trick. While the cards are a bit different, this QJ combination is a "double finesse" just like the J10 on Board 16. First you play toward the Q, losing to the king. Then you play toward the J. If either of the two missing honours is onside (very likely after North's 3 bid), you will eventually get your J.

The popular spot was 1NT, with results ranging from three off to four overtricks. NS have six top tricks in defence, so it's hard to believe declarer made 11 tricks, but I did find out the answer: North led a low diamond, and South failed to continue that suit after winning the A.
It looks like declarer has at least seven easy tricks (four spades, at least one heart and at least two clubs). However, playing the spades is tricky, with East having only one entry. The correct play is to run the 10 (winning) and play the 9. When the king appears, you win the ace, and then overtake the J with the Q to get back to cash the 8.
2 is a better spot, with at least eight solid tricks.

This one is 15 HCP opposite 9 HCP, but the 9-count is a bit more powerful than North's 10-count on Board 21, so most people bid game. This kind of 24-point game usually needs a bit of luck, and 3NT would have made easily if the spade finesse had worked.
The 4-1 club break should not present a problem; after seeing East show out on the second round, you can come back to hand to finesse against the jack. As predicted in the souvenir booklet, going one off in 3NT leaves you with a respectable matchpoint score, because many NS pairs are getting the clubs wrong.

Most East players made an invitational bid over 1NT, but of course West did not accept. This board is exactly the same as Board 24: a 24-point game that needs a bit of luck. This time, the hands fit very well and the luck is all good.
The singleton Q is worth a full trick, as well as a third stopper in the opponents' suit – a rare combination. With the Q dropping doubleton and the Q onside, you don't have to lose anything more than the AK and A.
Just don't forget to take the diamond finesse.

The majority played in 3 here, which turned out to be a smart move. If the clubs had broken, you would have wished you were in notrumps, with at least eight top tricks for +120 or better. With the clubs not breaking, 3 is the better spot, earning +110 for a 77% score.
We briefly discussed the defence against 2NT and 3 in the souvenir booklet. In 3, the defenders have five possible tricks (K, A, J, AQ) but they don't have time to get both the K and Q. They can attack one of those suits, but declarer will immediately play on hearts, setting up the J to discard the other loser.

Most clubs only play 27 boards, so we don't have a large sample size for this board, but those who did play it were mostly in 5, losing the two obvious tricks. About a third of the pairs took 12 tricks, which can only mean that declarer scored the K.
When West was declarer, the K was hidden; a low spade was played from dummy, South played "second hand low" and West's singleton king won the trick. If declarer had held KJ, South might have been right to play low, forcing declarer to guess whether to play the king or jack.
If West has shown ten minor-suit cards in the auction, South probably should grab the A as soon as possible, in case declarer sets up the Q for a spade discard.

We've talked a lot today about the double finesse, and here we have another one. This one is slightly different, because the J and 10 are in different hands; that means that the 9 is also an important card. The correct way to play this heart suit is to run the jack (or the nine) expecting to lose to the king or queen. Then, later, you play a heart to the ten, finessing against the other honour. This allows you to take two tricks if either of the missing honours is onside.
Here, they are both onside, so the double finesse works more quickly than expected. If East fails to cover the jack, it will win immediately; if East does cover, you can easily knock out the other honour to set up a trick. With this play in hearts, you are sure to make 4.
At many tables West led the Q, allowing declarer to win the A and then finesse against the J for a valuable overtrick (and a 94% score).

The popular spot here was 4, which is quite a lot for a combined 19-count. The ten-card fit is a great asset, but the lack of aces is a fatal problem. It's easy to see why East would bid 3 (in fact, it is necessary to bid 3, because defending 3 is a bad idea). It's not clear why either player would go on to game.
The defenders need to get all their aces to avoid a terrible score. Like Board 28, South has to guess whether to take the A or not. If he plays second-hand low, declarer might need to guess whether to play the king or jack. Today, declarer has a singleton, so he has no guess; he will go up with the king, and have no club loser. This is worth 86% to EW (94% if you are in game).
