2024 Australia-Wide Restricted Pairs
Your Personal Results Booklet by Brad Coles
William,
Welcome to your personal results analysis booklet for the 2024 Australia-Wide Restricted Pairs.
You will have already received your first booklet on the day of the event – an instructional booklet with advice on how to bid and play the hands. This is your second booklet, looking at the actual results from around Australia.
All of the participating clubs have submitted their board scores, and the event has been scored across the field. With over 500 tables submitted for each board, and over 13000 boards played overall, this is your chance to directly compare your results with players from all over the country, board by board.
For each board we have displayed a full national travelling scoreslip, plus a summary of the most common contracts and results, with some additional comments about the final results. The summary also shows your own result, and also the results of one of the top ranked pairs. This way you can see exactly what you needed to do if you wanted to win the event!
This booklet also contains the list of the top 500 pairs in the event, on the last few pages.
The top five pairs are:
1. Robin Archer & Charles Young Maine
2. Robyn Holcombe & Jo Forsyth Hamilton
3. Bob Dunk & Alan Hutchinson Gawler
4. Maureen Milgate & Kate Courts Wellington
5. Kevin Hughes & Lucy D'Ambrosio Central Coast
Best QLD: Neil & Chris Niemand Birkdale
Best WA: Wendy Wade & Michelle Randle Denmark

Table result: 2NT-N, NS120
NS winners' result: 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)-N, NS110 (NS 59%)

Comments:
2NT was the most common spot, probably using the above auction. At the time of writing, results are split evenly between 5, 7, 8 and 9 tricks.
The correct line of play is to win the heart lead, cash the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A, and lead another club. If West had followed to the second round with the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J or images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, everything would have been easy, but West followed with the nine. Now you have to guess whether to finesse the ten or rise with the queen.
If you guess to play the ten, it will force out the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, and you will have four club tricks, for eight tricks in total. If you rise with the queen, the clubs will not be set up, and the defenders can take eight tricks (images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, diamond to the jack, and a heart through declarer's queen).

Comments:
If the opponents don't knock out the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A, then declarer has time to make ten tricks in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). After drawing trumps, you can cash four rounds of hearts (overtaking the third round with the ace) and throw your club loser on the last heart.
Eventually you'll need to guess the diamond suit as well, in a similar position to the previous deal (this time missing the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AQ rather than the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)KJ). This time, you need to guess to rise with the king, playing West for the ace.
If the defenders do lead a club (or images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A then a club), you're a step behind. You can still make ten tricks in theory, by cashing just the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A and then going straight to hearts, but if you lead a second trump, West will win the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)J and grab his club trick.
Book prizes for 170 go to Ngaire Meehan and Elizabeth Cusack of Illawarra and Jamie Luxton and Yulia Koh of Undercroft.

NS winners' result: 1NT-W, EW90 (NS 40%)

Comments:
As predicted, the popular contract was split evenly between 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) by South and 1NT by East (after a 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) opening from South and a pass by North). East is right to bid 1NT in the passout seat, turning a 48% score defending 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) into a 78% score.
A 1NT opening from South, and a transfer to 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) from North, would have given NS about 89%.
After East bid 1NT, North could still have saved the day by bidding 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) when East's 1NT was passed around to him. It looks dangerous, but not as dangerous as sitting quietly while South leads a spade against 1NT.
Book prizes for 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) go to Robin Ward and Helen Ottosson of Kalamunda and Cheryl Waters and Erica Gray of Illawarra.

Comments:
Not much to say about this deal. With a trick to lose in each suit, most pairs made nine tricks in 3NT on a heart lead. Many of the pairs who made ten tricks received a club lead, most likely because East bid hearts at some point and scared South away from the heart lead.
Obviously you will score better if you drop the singleton images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)K, but that would be a very lucky guess.

Comments:
The field is split evenly between 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), which seems about right. It's a close game which could have gone either way. Well done to the EW pairs who got into the auction and caused some trouble by bidding spades.
It's tough for EW to get into the auction after 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), so I guess North must have passed as dealer at some tables. Sure, it's usually wrong to open with 11 HCP, but this is a really nice 11-count. Queens and jacks aren't always useful, but QJ96 is a lovely holding (potentially worth three tricks if partner has images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K2). You have a five-card major (with the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)109, so you might have four tricks if partner has images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J32). And two aces. And a singleton.
In summary, this North hand has a decent chance of making game opposite the right four-count
(2-J532-76543-K32). The hand is much better than some 13-counts, so you really must open with it.

Comments:
The popular result was nine tricks in 3NT, with most East players finding the club lead. When East leads the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)3 and dummy plays the two, West must put in the nine (finessing against dummy's images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J). The nine will force out declarer's ace, and the defenders will be able to take three club tricks when they win the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A. Actually, declarer should duck a couple of rounds of clubs before taking the ace, in case the person with the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A is unable to cash the fourth club, but that won't work here.
If West plays the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K on the first club, dummy's jack will become a second stopper and declarer makes ten tricks. Remember: kings are for putting on queens and jacks. If you can see that your king is sitting over the jack, hold on to the king until it can do something useful.

Comments:
My prediction that everyone would be in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was way off the mark, with many pairs actually getting as high as 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). With 14 HCP opposite 9 HCP, and no distributional values, this should not be happening.
Having said that, the hands fit together very nicely, and about half the pairs made ten tricks – half finessed North for the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q, and half finessed South. (As mentioned in the souvenir booklet, if you set up clubs you don't need to find the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q.)
There is no need to bid game on these 23-point hands at Matchpoints. Pairs who made ten tricks scored 68% even though they weren't in game; bidding game had more downside than upside.

Comments:
Every time a spade was led, the defenders were able to take five tricks. At tables were a diamond was led (the likely lead after East's 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) overcall) East needs to find a spade switch at trick two.
There are two clues pointing to the spade switch:
(a) South has failed to bid 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), so he will have only three. This means that West will have five.
(b) If East sets up his own diamonds, he will have no entry to cash them. It's better to set up partner's suit, because East's third spade will be an entry to partner's hand to cash the suit.
Book prizes for beating 3NT go to Barbie Hufton and Ondy Crawford of Cootamundra and Peter Hasenkam and Peter Mathieson of Birkdale.

Comments:
Most pairs stopped in the excellent 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), or the almost-as-good 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is a better spot, but not easy to reach – the pairs who did find the heart fit had no chance of stopping in a partscore.
In the above auction (played by computer program Jack before the event) North had a chance for a good score by passing out 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). North's reasoning should have been, "I have done very well by finding the heart fit, because my Stayman bid was very aggressive and many people will not bid 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes). I'm probably already beating the pairs who didn't find the heart fit, so I'm not going to risk my excellent score by gambling on a 23-point game."

Comments:
Despite Jack's auction to an awful 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) contract (see above) the auction I recommended in the souvenir booklet puts South in an excellent 1NT contract. In practice, very few Souths are in 1NT; it looks like the East players were striking the first blow, and they got to 1NT before South did.
Playing in 1NT is always a great strategy, as it is often the right spot, and when it is not the right spot, it is often misdefended. Here, some Easts made 1NT for a 69% score, and some were two off for a 16% score. Both of these percentages would have been much higher for EW at nil-vulnerable (probably about 80% and 40%), because playing in 1NT has a much higher upside when neither side is vulnerable and undertricks come in 50s.
I didn't enjoy seeing so many Wests in 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes). It is rarely a good idea to bid a five-card suit twice, and West was lucky that the damage was only -100.

Comments:
Well done to all the pairs who played in 1NT. Jack got to 2NT (see above) but I did not approve of South's bidding in that auction.
In practice it didn't matter, because everyone made at least eight tricks, but in the long run you will show a profit by playing hands like this in 1NT. We cannot have more than 25 HCP, and that includes a singleton king. 3NT might make (if partner has a good hand) but it is likely to need some work.
If you're good enough to make nine tricks, you should already have an above-average score (in this case 78%, just like on Board 8).

Comments:
I see a lot of pairs playing a 16-18 1NT opening here, as well as a few 15-18. The recommended strength for a strong notrump opening in the modern game is 15-17.
15-18 puts far too much pressure on responder. If you pass with 7 HCP, you might miss a 25-point game, but if you bid with 7 HCP, you might find yourself playing in 2NT with just 22 points. You don't need to give yourself such difficult decisions.
16-18 is a bit better, but that just means opener's 1NT rebid is 12-15. Again, a four-point range means responder never knows when to raise.
16-18 was a fine range in the 1980s, when opener promised 13 HCP (so the 1NT rebid was 13-15). Today, 12 HCP is a normal opening, and your 1NT opening range has to adjust to keep up with the modern game (15-17 opening, 12-14 rebid).

Comments:
A lot of pairs are in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), which means that North is passing his partner's three-level overcall with 11 HCP. That's not an unreasonable choice, but I think it will be wrong more often than it's right. If South has something like images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)AQJ854, there will be six club tricks to contribute towards a 3NT contract.
Most pairs in 3NT made it, sometimes with an overtrick. In 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), an overtrick will earn South an average board (losing just the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q and the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)AK). Note: if East starts with three rounds of spades, dummy must ruff with the eight, otherwise West will be able to ruff with the six.
Well done to the pairs in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes); that is an excellent contract, giving you a chance to avoid a club loser. After drawing trumps and cashing the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)AK, you see East show out, so you can take a ruffing finesse against West's images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q (play the jack, and let it run if West doesn't cover it).

Comments:
The auction given above was probably reproduced at most tables. This was a missed opportunity for EW, who can easily make +140 in spades (an 83% score), but they settled for +50 (scoring 45%) or worse, -90 (scoring 25%).
Being the first pair to reach 1NT gives you a huge edge in the auction, but it doesn't mean the opponents have to lay down and die. It's essential to play a convention that allows you to find your best fit over an opponent's 1NT opening. There are many different conventions available; some of the popular ones aren't actually very efficient, but even the worst of them is better than nothing.

Comments:
I predicted a 90% score for making slam here, but it looks like I underestimated the field. With so many pairs bidding slam, many of them in 6NT, 6images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) scores just 83%, so you need to be in 6NT for the really good score. Still, 83% is an excellent result.
The people who really lost out here are the pairs in 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes). It's a common dilemma in slam bidding: you go past the easy 3NT, looking to play in 6images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), and when you eventually decide not to bid slam you are left stranded in the low-scoring minor-suit game, wishing you were in 3NT. In these situations it's often best to just bid the slam and cross your fingers. With 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) scoring just 20%, you don't have much to lose by going up a level in search of a big bonus.

Comments:
The popular spot was 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), but we have no way of knowing whether NS went there voluntarily or were pushed there by EW. About half of them failed in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), so it would have been better to stay in 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), or to defend whatever contract EW tried to play, but you can't criticise North for bidding. It's almost always right to show four-card support when you have it.

Comments:
It's interesting to see so many pairs in 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) and 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), because pairs in this event don't usually play in 4-3 fits. Most likely the auction was 1images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)-1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)-1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and then South either passed or raised to 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes).
The popular spot was 1NT, either on the given auction, or with South responding 1NT on the first round. There isn't really a lot of reason for South to bid the diamonds. If anything, bidding 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) might discourage West from leading a diamond (your second-best suit), but he was unlikely to be leading one anyway. West will always lead a major against a 1images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)-1NT auction.

Comments:
4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was the common spot, but 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) is not far behind. There's no way of knowing how many North players bid 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), but hopefully most of them did, and that makes it hard for East to bid the spades. Well done if you got to 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) in spite of a 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) overcall.
To make 12 tricks in either contract, you need to pick up the spades without loss. When you finesse the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)Q, you see North's ten drop, so your images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)J9 are now equals; you can cross back to hand and run the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)J through South's king.

Comments:
A reasonably even split here between 1NT, 2NT and 3NT, with 2NT in the minority. That's a fairly normal result for 14 opposite 11. Some people don't invite with the 11-count, so they play in 1NT; others do invite, and they play in 3NT when partner accepts the invitation.
For the pairs in 2NT, South is probably inviting game (as in the above auction) and North is failing to accept the invitation. It's important to remember that when partner bids 2NT, they are expecting you to bid 3NT unless you have a minimum hand. 14 HCP is not a minimum hand (in fact, if you were any better you would have opened 1NT, not 1images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)).

Comments:
This one is similar to the previous one, but 17 opposite 8 rather than 14 opposite 11. Same result: many of the North players are inviting game, and getting to 3NT, while some are passing 1NT. For the pairs in 2NT, North must not have realised that partner's 2NT bid was invitational.
Assuming 1NT is 15-17, I would be fine with North passing 1NT if the hand had no major, but on this hand North has to bid. If South had held four hearts, then there would have been a lot of pairs in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) (or 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)) so playing in 1NT would have been a very poor result. If you have no chance of a major-suit fit, then stopping in 1NT might have some upside.

Comments:
No confusion on this one: 15 opposite 15, so everyone is in 3NT. If NS take the first two tricks, then declarer has the rest. If NS don't take the first two tricks, declarer can take 12 (five clubs, four diamonds and three hearts).
6images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is a pretty good contract, but you'd need some good conventional methods to reach it confidently. In the given auction above, EW were playing 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) as natural, but if they had been playing the popular convention fourth suit forcing, then East would not have bid 1NT. A 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) rebid on the third round might have pointed the auction in the right direction.

Comments:
With a ten-card fit, this is another board with very little variation. Everyone is in spades, making 9, 10 or 11 tricks. Normally 21 HCP would be enough for game in a ten-card fit, but singleton kings are not very useful; if North had held the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K instead of the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K, this would have been an easy ten tricks.
As it stands, the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K does allow North to discard his club losers on the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AQ, so if East fails to find the club lead, some Norths are making game.

Comments:
The common contract here is 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), so basically that is the above auction, without West's aggressive 3NT bid. 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is a good contract, and quite a few Souths decided to sacrifice against it with a 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) bid. Vulnerability is a curse, and 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) should be going two off (-200 and just an 8% score) but most pairs escaped for just one off (still not great, at a 20% score, but slightly better than the 14% score defending 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)).
Basically, there was not much NS could do here to get a decent score, apart from hoping that EW did something wrong, such as failing to bid over North's 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), or competing too aggressively over South's 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). If EW make sensible decisions, NS are powerless here.

Comments:
A lot of NS pairs got to play in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) here, but EW would have done better to compete in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes). 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) can go two off on a trump lead, but that's still better than defending 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes). Even better, 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) might push NS to 4images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), where you might be able to beat them.
NS might be able to make 4images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), losing just one diamond and two trumps, but the 4-0 break seems to have been very disconcerting for most players. I'm guessing that the pairs who went down failed to deal with their diamond losers before touching trumps. East probably ended up in a position where he could draw all of dummy's trumps and then cash some diamond tricks.
I've put the 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) bidders in the prize draw, because it's an excellent contract (except if trumps are 4-0).
Book prizes for 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) go to Pranati Basu and Michael Turner of Illawarra and Bev Daniel and Ray Peirce of Great Lakes.

Comments:
This is the toughest hand in the set, and there are not a lot of pairs making a contract. Some pairs managed to stop in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), which is amazing, and several pairs in 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) were able to make that contract.
I expected 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) to lose just two trumps and a diamond at most tables; the contract can always be beaten on a spade or diamond lead, but I was not expecting many Wests to find that lead.
5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) is the spot that can't be beaten, but that's too hard to reach.

Comments:
Same auction as Board 7, and once again there are a lot of pairs who got to 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). This one is even weaker than Board 7, with just 22 HCP in the combined hands this time, and some of those points are in a form of a singleton queen, so you should not be in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes).
On this board, even 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is too high, even though a few pairs in 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) did manage to make it. Going down in 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) left EW with just a 21% score, and the pairs who were two off in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) got just 4%.
As I said on Board 7, there's very little to gain from bidding these 22-point games at Matchpoints. The pairs who made 170 for ten tricks scored 91% here; by bidding game, you're risking a lot for very little gain.

Comments:
In the souvenir booklet, I didn't even mention the possibility of EW getting to 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) on this deal, because I thought that was too difficult. Well done to all of the pairs who were two off in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) for a 58% score, and especially the ones who managed to get out for one off, for 79%. They would not have done nearly so well defending 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) (31% at best, but more likely 14%).
Once again, the pairs who bid game on just 21 HCP had a lot to lose. NS would have scored 86% for making 170 in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), but they ones who bid game usually went went off in game scored just 8%.

Comments:
I thought there would be a wider range of scores on this board, but the fact that most clubs only play 27 boards means that we don't have a large sample to choose from at this point.
There are a few Wests who opened 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) instead of 1NT, which might leave them with a problem on the second round. If North overcalls 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), and that is passed back to West, then West has an easy takeout double, and East will be able to bid 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes).
However, if North stays silent, and East responds 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), then West has a much tougher decision. The hand is obviously too strong to rebid 1NT (which would be 12-14) and 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) will often put you in a six-card fit. That's why you have to open 1NT when you have a balanced hand in your 1NT range.
Over a 1NT opening, reaching 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is child's play.

Comments:
The common contract was 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), providing another reminder that it is rarely a good idea to let the opponents play in a fit at the two-level. Defending 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is worth just 30% to EW, but if they bid 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) they can upgrade that to a huge 94%.
Of course, NS still have a say in the matter, and many of the NS pairs correctly bid on to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). They didn't know if 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) would make, but even if it goes off it is likely to be better than defending 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes).
The final step is when EW have to decide whether to bid on to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). Bidding three over three is usually a bad idea, but when neither side is vulnerable you can often get away with it. Sometimes 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) will both be failing, so bidding 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) turns a plus into a minus, but on any other layout 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) will show a profit. Today, 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) turns -140 (30%) into -50 (65%).
