2024 Australia-Wide Open Pairs
Your Personal Results Booklet by Brad Coles
James,
Welcome to your personal results analysis booklet for the 2024 Australia-Wide Open Pairs.
You will have already received your first booklet on the day of the event – an instructional booklet with advice on how to bid and play the hands. This is your second booklet, looking at the actual results from around Australia.
All of the participating clubs have submitted their board scores, and the event has been scored across the field. With over 600 tables submitted for each board, and over 18000 boards played overall, this is your chance to directly compare your results with players from all over the country, board by board.
For each board we have displayed a full national travelling scoreslip, plus a summary of the most common contracts and results, with some additional comments about the final results. The summary also shows your own result, and also the results of one of the top ranked pairs. This way you can see exactly what you needed to do if you wanted to win the event!
This booklet also contains the list of the top 500 pairs in the event, on the last few pages.
The top five pairs are:
1. Debbie Pepper & Jennifer Hickmott Alice Springs
2. Richard Lawrie & Terry Johnston Geelong
3. Henry & John McMahon Wagga Wagga
4. Geof Blacklaws & David Kininmonth Swan
5. Dee Jierasak & William Van Bakel Malanda

Comments:
Many NS pairs subsided in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), missing game. In the given auction from the Open Playoffs, West's light 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) overcall helped propel NS into 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), but in an uncontested auction it's actually much harder for South to discover that North has five hearts. 1images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)-1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)-pass will be a common auction if West stays silent.
The EW pairs score poorly when their opponents bid game, but they still have a small amount of control over their own destiny. If they cash their two aces, they score 34% instead of 13%. Even on a board where things don't go your way, it's better to get a below-average score than a bottom.

Comments:
Both sides have just one very poor eight-card fit, so in theory you should want to avoid the three-level. When the deal was originally played, one pair played in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) NS and one pair played 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) EW, with both contracts making on imperfect defence. Similarly, 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) and 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) were the most common contracts today, but this time they were beaten more often than not.
If NS had been non-vul, -50 in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) would have been a wonderful score. Vulnerable, going -100 in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) was a poor trade, as defending 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) would have cost just -90 (although it still showed a small profit against -110). In other words, you can't know whether 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is a good move unless you know how good your defence would have been against 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)!
NS pairs who made 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) scored 86%, and the EW pairs who made 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) scored 75%, so the defenders had full control on this board.

Comments:
This board was split fairly evenly between eight, nine and ten tricks. On the common club lead, declarer's obvious tricks are the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)AQ, images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AKQ, images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K and two hearts, for eight tricks. Of course, if South holds up the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A, you will need an entry to reach dummy's fourth heart, and the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q will serve as that entry (and it will also be your ninth trick).
There is nothing the defenders can do to prevent those nine tricks; the best they can do is stop you from scoring the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)8, images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)J or images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)4. Conceding an overtrick will turn a shabby 19% score into a shocking 6% score. The only way for NS to achieve even an average score on this board is to have their opponents make a serious error (ie. stopping in 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) or failing in 3NT).

Comments:
Many pairs stayed out of slam here, but they still managed an average score if they made 12 tricks. Making 11 tricks is a terrible score no matter what contract you play in. With the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K and images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q both onside, there is no reason to lose any tricks in those suits.
You can give yourself a quiet pat on the back if you managed to avoid taking the heart finesse. With five trumps, five diamonds, and two club ruffs, you can even hide the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A in your pocket and still take 12 tricks.
The diamond finesse, however, is essential (but make sure you cash the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A first in case East has a singleton queen).

Comments:
The most frequent spot was 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) by EW, although 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) by NS was not far behind. Five-level decisions are tough for even the most experienced players. If West knew that he had two huge solid fits, he would know that defending is a bad idea, but a quick 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) bid from South will ensure that West does not have enough information to make that decision.
At the time of writing, more than 20 NS pairs made the brave sacrifice in 6images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) over 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), turning a likely 33% score into a 60% or 70% score, and earning a place in the spot prize draw.
Book prizes for the NS sacrifice go to Frank Milford and Prue Dick of Launceston, and Heide Taylor and Janet Burgess of Bridgetown.

Comments:
Many Souths led the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J against 3NT, but only about a quarter of them beat the contract. That might be due to good play by declarer, holding up the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A for two rounds. If East takes the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A too early, then when North gets on lead with an ace he will cash the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K, dropping dummy's queen, and cash three diamonds and two ace. However, if declarer holds up the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A until North has none left, South's fourth diamond will be stranded.
On any lead other than the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J or images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)10, there are ten tricks available: four spades, three hearts, two clubs and one diamond. The only catch is if South leads the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)6 – now declarer is likely to go wrong, rising with the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q, and ending up in the same position as those who received the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J lead.

Comments:
We've seen the Law of Total Tricks in play a couple of times already today. On Board 2, no one had a decent fit, and no one could make a three-level contract. On Board 5, both sides had huge fits, and both sides could make a five-level contract. This board is more typical, with one side having an average eight-card fit and the other side having nine. On these 'normal' boards, it is usually ok for one side to go to the three-level, but not both (particularly if they are vulnerable).
Here, the NS pairs who played in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) scored 60% if they took all of their tricks (some of them failed to ruff their fourth diamond, and only scored 39%). But the bigger upside of bidding 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is that it pushed some of the EW pairs into 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), picking up a 79% score for NS if they defended correctly.

Comments:
As predicted, this board is split between 10, 11 and 12 tricks, with the majority sitting in the middle. In 3NT, the matchpoint scores for these three results are 44%, 68% and 88%. This kind of board is the reason that Matchpoint Bridge is more difficult than Teams Bridge, because it is simply impossible to know how many tricks you should be aiming for.
The most challenging defence is images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A and then a switch to the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J. Declarer can guarantee at least ten tricks by rising with the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A, but if he tries the club finesse and it loses, the defence might take the first four tricks. I would rise with the ace, and accept the poor score when it turns out the finesse was winning all along.
As it turns out, there are still two ways to recover the 11th trick even after this poor start.

Comments:
4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was slightly more popular than 3NT. 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is the better spot, scoring ten tricks more often than 3NT, but both contracts failed about 25% of the time.
The three obvious losers in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) are two spades and a club, so the result will depend on whether you can set up a diamond for a club discard.
3NT is a more interesting spot. On a diamond lead, South has decent chances of 11 tricks. South will continue diamonds after winning the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)Q, but if you can keep North off lead, you might never have to lose a diamond. Ducking two rounds of spades to South will work against most North players, but a select few will find a way to foil this plan.

Comments:
Despite 24 HCP and a void, it's hard to get to game on this board (particularly the higher-scoring one, 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)). For the partscores, playing in the minor was worth 40% and the major was 60%. Bidding any game was worth 80%.
On some lines of defence, you can make 11 tricks in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (five spades, five clubs and a heart). To stop this from happening, the defenders have to lead a diamond (either at trick one, or after taking just one heart). Once the North hand is down to four trumps, he won't have time to set up the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J, and will have to cash out for ten tricks.
As it turned out, the overtrick wasn't worth much, because 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is already such a great contract.

Comments:
The most popular contracts were all by EW: 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), 4images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), and even 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). Not a great result for NS, because they can make 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), but with North holding a two-count it is hard to get there. Selling out to 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) was a poor effort though, and worth only 26% for NS.
It's hard to come up with a sensible excuse for NS to compete over 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), but the vulnerability is an important factor. When both sides are non-vul, that means that either side can afford to go two off in their contract and still show a profit against the opponents' partscore.
In the above auction, South's takeout double shows clubs and hearts, so North might well take the view that (a) EW have a nine- or ten-card fit and will easily make 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), and (b) 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is unlikely to go more than two off.

Comments:
Each year I choose six boards to be a part of a "spot prize" draw, with players who achieve a specified result going into the draw for one of 24 book prizes. I chose this board because I thought reaching 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) would be a tough challenge for EW, so I'm surprised that it turned out to be the most common contract. Bidding and making 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was worth 83% for EW.
NS can make three of a minor (or even better, 2NT) but it's tough to compete if EW bid 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) on the first round. South's hand is the wrong shape for a takeout double of 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and North's is the wrong strength. If East passes 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), it will be much easier for South to get into the auction.
Book prizes for playing in spades go to Ellen Jackson and Marie Rutledge of Tamworth, and Suzanne Tooth and Jen Langley of Mollymook.

Comments:
The most common contract was 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but it's not clear whether North or South was responsible. Either South bid 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) (which is non-forcing over 1NT) and North rescued to 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), or North bid 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) all on his own. When the board was originally played, James and Liam passed out 1NT because of the vulnerability.
Looking at all four hands, bidding the vulnerable 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is an error, because it turns -90 into -100, but in practice the "declarer's advantage" often allows you to get away with errors like this. Most EW pairs made overtricks in 1NT (presumably after North wasted his images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A on his partner's queen at trick one), so the Norths who went -100 in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) actually showed a profit. Still, North would have done better to pass 1NT and defend accurately.
Many Norths were even allowed to make 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), presumably after East tried to cash the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AK.

Comments:
Most pairs reached 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). Even if East doesn't open the bidding, he will certainly force to game when West opens. At the time of writing, 12 Souths have found the essential trump lead which can beat 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes); if NS never lead trumps, declarer can actually make 6images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)!
The pairs in 3NT took a big risk, holding a long semi-solid spade suit with no entry. Luckily West had the key card to make the suit run, but even so, the defenders have five top tricks to cash. Making just nine on a low club lead was worth 56% to EW, and many pairs even found one or two overtricks when South unguarded the diamonds.
Book prizes for the trump lead go to Warren Graham and Neil Topham of Sydney, and Barbara Lott and Linda Siford of Nambucca.

Comments:
In the souvenir booklet I predicted that if you can hold the damage on this board to -200, you should get a decent score, and that turned out to be the case. When you run into a terrible layout, it's important to remember that every other pair is facing the same problems as you, and some of them will be losing more tricks than they should.
Most pairs were in 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) by North, which is the best realistic contract on the board. The par contract (the contract you would be in if you could see all of the cards) is a remarkable 3NT by West. With a probability of success of less than one in 1000, this may be the luckiest contract I've seen.
Did any West player make 3NT? Yes, but she was defending! Margaret Barker and Jenny Day at Orange Bridge Club scored +500 by taking nine tricks in defence against South's 3NT.

Comments:
Like Board 12, this board illustrates the power of a 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) bid. Getting to 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) as fast as possible always poses a problem for the opponents, and at most tables it managed to buy the contract despite EW's combined total of just 16 HCP. NS can make 3NT (another wildly lucky contract) but any score higher than +100 is a great result, with NS scoring 66% just for making 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes).
For EW, many pairs made their 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) for a score of at least 78%. A few Norths led a poorly-judged images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A against 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but a heart lead also works out poorly. Declarer can insert the ten, ruffing out South's king, and making the contract with five trumps, the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AQ and at least one diamond ruff.

Comments:
The popular contract here was an even split between two extremes: some pairs finding the excellent 4images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) bid over 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (81% for EW) and some failing to even bid over 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (71%-86% for NS). It all depends on whether East finds the takeout double over 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). East might also get a chance to double 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but it's far safer to do it at the one-level.
Most of the NS pairs in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) made at least one overtrick. The contract has five losers, but it's almost impossible for the defence to find them with East on lead. If you swap the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A and images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K, then eight tricks would be the normal result: West would win the diamond lead, switch to the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)Q, and take two hearts, two minor-suit aces and a heart ruff.
3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is a better spot for NS; that cannot be beaten.
Book prizes for playing in 4images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) go to Ann Gale and Jill Smith of Blue Mountains, and Gail Beverley and Colleen Milne of Central Coast.

EW winners' result: 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)-E, EW110 (EW 71%)

Comments:
The popular spot was 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) by East, presumably after a weak two opening, and this was worth 71% to EW. On a non-diamond lead an overtrick is possible (discarding a diamond on the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K) and that was worth 85%.
If East fails to open 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), North and South both have an opportunity to get into the auction. Despite the two aces, I don't consider South's hand to be worth an opening, with its unsupported queen and jack and the awful 4333 shape.
That puts the ball in North's court: when West opens 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), North needs to find a 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) overcall to avoid being shut out. This will enable NS to compete to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) over 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). This is not a huge improvement in itself (improving your score from -110 to -100) but it does have the potential to push EW to the three-level, and that's the real upside of getting into the auction.

Comments:
I was suprised to see that the popular spot was 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), because not even the expert pair who originally played this board managed to get there. Looking at all four hands, it is a better spot than 1NT, because EW have five diamonds to cash against 1NT (and the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A) and they have two opportunities to find them. However, half of the 1NT pairs were allowed to make overtricks, so they scored a lucky win over the 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) bidders.
The highest-scoring spot on the deal is 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) (yes, sometimes it is actually right to choose the minor). However most pairs failed to take advantage of the opportunity to score +130 in that contract. There are several ways to reach ten tricks, and the safest is probably by taking lots of ruffs. You can take one spade, the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AK, two spade ruffs in dummy, and three diamond ruffs in hand. That's eight tricks, and you still have the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A and images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q to come.

Comments:
When this board was originally played in the Open Playoff, one declarer took seven tricks in 1NT and the other declarer took nine. That split was also true today, but there were also plenty of people taking eight. Meanwhile, the declarers in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (or 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)) usually took nine, for an average board.
To take the maximum tricks available (nine in 1NT or ten in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)) you need to avoid losing a spade trick. There are two potential layouts where this is possible. If North has a singleton king, you can cash the ace, and then finesse against South's jack. However, if South has a singleton jack, then you can lead the queen, forcing North to cover with the king, while South's jack falls under the queen. That is the winning line on this occasion.

Comments:
As expected, the majority did not come close to bidding game on this difficult board, despite the combined 27-count. I assume the common auction was 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)-2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)-3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)-pass.
It's a tough problem for West, but 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) is forcing in this auction, and you are not allowed to pass it. A 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) opener will often have game in his own hand, and the reason he opened 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is because he wants to force you to keep bidding while he works out where to play the hand.
If he was happy for you to pass 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), he would have just opened 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes).

Comments:
A bit over half of the NS field reached game with this 21-HCP combination, as did the pairs who played this board in the Open Playoff. Quite a few EW pairs took out some insurance in 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), but they would have done better to defend 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) (assuming they defended accurately).
Assuming West is on lead, you should lead the singleton. You could spend your energy on every deal trying to work whether to lead your singleton or partner's suit, but there's a lot of guesswork in opening leads. You'll have an easier life if you just lead the singleton and save your thinking time for after you've had a look at dummy.
This is even more true if your partner has shown a good hand, as here. All you need is East to have one ace, so he can get on lead to give you a ruff, and 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is certainly one off. If partner has two aces (not unusual for an opening hand) then it's two off.
Useful tip: partner will be able to tell that your images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)2 lead is a singleton, so he can give a suit preference signal at trick one. On this hand it doesn't matter, of course, because he has both aces.

Comments:
There are two important decisions for EW on this deal: do we bid 3NT, and if not, should we play in the minor. Despite a couple of today's boards proving the exception, it's usually right to play in notrumps rather than the minor, and that is certainly the case here. To get an above-average score, EW needs at least +170 on this board, and that won't happen in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes).
It's not clear why so many people took just nine tricks in 3NT, as declarer starts with four diamonds, four clubs and the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A, and has a double stopper in each major. My guess is that declarer failed to stop the defenders' spades from running; South must have underled the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)K three times, with dummy always playing low.

Comments:
This is the only flat board in today's set, with almost everyone scoring 420 in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). (The next two boards are also flat in the auction, but with more variance in the play.)
There were a small number of people who went one off, possibly by disregarding the "eight ever, nine never" guideline. At some tables East will enter the bidding (Liam Milne made a preemptive 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) bid) and this will strongly override the nine-never guideline; in this case, you should play the preempter for a singleton spade, and finesse West for the queen. But that leads to the same result in this case, hence the flat board.

Comments:
Most pairs are in 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) by NS, with an even split between ten and eleven tricks. At a different vulnerability, the par contract would be 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)x by EW (or 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)x) but at unfavourable vulnerability EW cannot afford to take the sacrifice. Nevertheless, there were quite a few pairs in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and they were not doubled so they got away with it. Two off in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was worth 53% for EW, but if they had been doubled they would have scored a rare 0%.
In 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), North can make 11 tricks, losing a spade and a diamond, but it's harder than it looks. If East is sharp enough to take out dummy's images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A entry early in the play and hold up the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A until the third round so that there is no entry in that suit either, then eleven tricks will be a real struggle. I'm not sure how many people can find that defence, but East should be thinking along those lines after seeing the threatening diamond suit in dummy.

Comments:
Almost everyone is in 3NT here, with scores varying between 9, 10 and 11 tricks. Let's say South leads a low club (nothing else is any better). Declarer wins with the ten and plays a diamond to the jack (South cannot afford to rise with the king, because this will give declarer three diamond tricks). Next, declarer might try the hearts, playing a heart to the king and finessing against South's queen. Now declarer can cross to the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A and play a club towards the king.
That's a lot of good guessing, resulting in three spades, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. There are plenty of other ways the play might go, so it's not surprising that most declarers made just ten tricks.

Comments:
Most NS pairs reached 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), possibly after seeing their opponents bid to 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes). At more than a quarter of the tables, West did very well to double 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) – without the double, EW only score 49%, but the double increases that score to 72%.
More than 100 NS pairs were permitted to play in a diamond partscore, which was an expensive mistake by EW. With an 11-card fit, it is rarely right to defend at the four-level, especially when you are not vulnerable and both hands have side-suit shortages.

Comments:
This time NS has the 11-card fit, but (unlike EW on the previous board) they are vulnerable and don't have any side-suit shortages. Well, technically North does have a diamond shortage, but singleton kings don't count as shortages!
Accordingly, the bidding stopped lower than on the previous board, with many NS pairs playing in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) for a 67% score (83% for an overtrick).
On Board 7 we discussed that on most boards it is wrong for both sides to try to play at the three-level, but that all changes when both sides have a 9+ fit. Here, EW have a great fit, favourable vulnerability, and excellent distribution; they should not be selling out to 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes).
